What separates “authentic” Italian food from Little Italy?

Dagens PS meets our Head Chef Laura Marino to find out.

Our third themed month of the year is a bit different from the previous ones. Instead of drawing inspiration from a specific region or island in Italy, the dishes and drinks this time are inspired by Little Italy in New York. Little Italy can be interpreted as a broader concept than just the New York neighborhood—it refers to the strong influence Italians have had on cuisines around the world. And who better to explain the influence behind L’Avventura’s take on Little Italy than our Head Chef and Sicilian native Laura Marino, who was interviewed by Dagens PS about the theme of the month?

“Classic Italy is caponata, vongole, simplicity. Little Italy is meatballs, casseroles, Alfredo. More meat, more cheese, more attitude. It’s about what happened when Italian immigrants suddenly gained access to different ingredients—and new possibilities.” – Laura Marino

During the month of May, Little Italy takes over L’Avventura with added dishes that let the kitchen tap into imagination—and most importantly, delicious creations inspired by New York’s most Italian district. The menu features spicy meatballs, chicken parm, baked mussels, and generous platters. It’s not subtle—it’s comforting, buttery, cheesy, and a little crazy, and that’s exactly what Laura is going for.
